Coastal air can carry salt onto the outdoor coil, casing and electrical components. A sheltered site may behave differently from an exposed seafront, even at a similar distance from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask the installer to assess how the prevailing wind, sea spray and surrounding buildings affect the proposed position. The chosen unit must also have the clearances in its installation manual, so a screen or enclosure cannot simply be added to keep salt off it.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Changes introduced in May 2025 gave more flexibility for domestic air-source heat pumps in England. An installation can be permitted development only where all the applicable conditions are met. These include the relevant MCS planning standard and sound calculation, unit size and number, location, and restrictions affecting listed buildings or designated land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other manufacturers and coatings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For Daikin, Vaillant, Grant or another make, ask the supplier to identify the applicable model manual and written coastal guidance. An aftermarket coil coating should be used only with the manufacturer\u2019s approval, including confirmation of warranty and heat-transfer implications.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    AFTER INSTALLATION<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Keep protection part of the maintenance plan.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Follow the manufacturer\u2019s service schedule and keep the outdoor unit free from obstructions. During servicing, ask the engineer to inspect the coil, fins, casing, fixings, electrical enclosures and condensate route for signs of corrosion or damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Do not add a coating, enclosure or aggressive cleaning method without checking the model instructions and warranty. Record the approved protection and the servicing carried out so future owners and engineers know what was specified.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
