Why Is the Mould Forming?
This short test module introduces a practical diagnostic approach to damp and mould in domestic buildings.
Learning section 1 — start with the cause
Mould is a symptom. A useful assessment asks what moisture source is present, what the internal humidity is doing, how cold the surface becomes, and whether ventilation and heating are adequate.
Learning section 2 — surface temperature matters
Cold surfaces increase local relative humidity. Thermal bridges, poorly insulated junctions and restricted air movement behind furniture can make individual areas more vulnerable even where the rest of the room appears dry.
Learning section 3 — ventilation after retrofit
Reducing uncontrolled air leakage without considering purposeful ventilation can increase moisture risk. Retrofit decisions should therefore consider insulation, airtightness, ventilation, heating and occupant use together.
