My home is cold. What should I check first?
Start with the problem you are experiencing. You do not need to choose an insulation product or heating system before understanding the cause.
The heating has stopped
Check only the normal user controls, timer and thermostat. Record the boiler or heat-pump model, any fault code and whether hot water still works. Follow the exact appliance’s user instructions; do not remove covers or repeatedly reset a recurring fault. Read the safe boiler-fault checks.
One room is colder than the others
Note when it happens and whether the radiator or other emitter warms up. Check normal room controls and look for draughts, visible gaps, leaks or cold surfaces. Emitter output, circulation, controls and local heat loss may all need checking. Explore the heating-system checks.
The whole home loses warmth quickly
Look at its construction, condition, insulation, ventilation and heating together. Repair leaks and defects before covering them. An EPC offers useful information, but is not a condition survey or a heating design. Understand your EPC and plan the whole home.
The home is damp, or heating costs prevent adequate warmth
Follow the damp and mould guide and check funding and support. If you rent, report heating failures, leaks and damp promptly to your landlord and keep dated photographs and correspondence. Use the appropriate emergency service for an immediate danger; an online enquiry is not an emergency response.
Ask for independent advice about your home. Include the property type, what is happening, when it started and any relevant work already completed.
